With the kids back in school and summer wrapping up, I thought it would be a good time to remind folks about three fun events coming up this September right here in Riverside. On Friday, September 8th from 6:30 pm to 9 pm, RIV-Inia returns to Guthrie Park. Zydeco Voodoo will take the stage starting at 7 pm bringing their New Orleans inspired music with them. Mollie's Public House will also be there covering all your food & beverage needs. Bring a blanket, chairs, picnic basket and whatever else you might need for what should be another great family event right here in Riverside. On Thursday, September 21st, Riverside Parks & Recreation is hosting their annual Touch-A-Truck event for the kids. Here are the details courtesy of the Parks & Recreation Facebook page: Animal Farm will be our musical entertainment! Most children are simply fascinated with all things motorized! Now’s their chance to explore the vehicles that excite their senses! Come make the lights flash, honk the horn, sound the siren and get uncover the mysteries of BIG vehicles at Touch-A-Truck! Don't miss out! We've attended this event the past few years and it's been great. Kids really enjoy the music and the chance to test out all the big trucks for themselves. On Saturday, September 30th, starting at 4 pm, the Hop Stop Craft Beer Fest returns to the Riverside Train Station. This annual event is hosted by Riverside Foods & the Fredrick Law Olmsted Society (FLOS). My favorite thing so far about this podcast has been discovering folks here in Riverside doing cool things that I wouldn't have otherwise known about. My guest today is no exception.
Laura Muller owns and operates Spicy Latina Mom, a website dedicated to a healthy taste for Mexican food and more. In addition to sharing hundreds of free recipes and having her own cookbook, Laura is a YouTube sensation with almost one million subscribers to her Spanish-speaking channel - Las Recetas de Laura - and over seventy-two million views of her videos! You can visit and subscribe to her English-speaking YouTube channel Spicy Latina Mom. In our conversation, we discuss Laura's journey from her native Mexico to Riverside, how her personal struggles lead her to start her business & share her story with a growing online community, and how Riverside has welcomed her family with open arms in their short time here. I hope you enjoy my conversation with our new neighbor, Laura Muller.

In the last two years we've called Riverside home, I've already witnessed a few impaired driving incidents on our block right in front of our home. From talking with neighbors who have been in Riverside for many years, it sounds like it can be a relatively common occurrence and an unnerving one at that.
Needless to say, I was excited when I read the recent Chicago Sun-Times article and Village release about the new partnership between Lyft, the popular ride share service, and the Riverside Police Department, which will start distributing discount cards for rides with Lyft. According to the Sun-Times article, Riverside Police Department is the first department in Illinois to partner with Lyft on an anti-DUI program. It's great to see our local law enforcement being proactive in reducing impaired driving incidents. Check out the Sun-Times article and Village release for more information. It also sounds like these discount cards could be made available at local restaurants & bars in the future. I hope this program continues to help reduce impaired driving and keep our roads safe here in Riverside. UPDATE: The Riverside-Brookfield Landmark also has a great article up with all the details.
